Aromatherapy is the practice of using the pure natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance emotional, spiritual and physical well-being.

The basic definition of an essential oil is a hydrophobic liquid that contains aromatic compounds. They are sourced from plant materials such as leaves, roots, stems, seeds, fruits, flowers, or bark. The term “essential” oils is used because the liquid contains the essence of whatever its source plant is. The oil itself is a highly potent, highly concentrated substance.

The aromatic oil from a plant has many different healing properties. For over 5,000 years, aromatherapy has been a trusted practice among cultures around the globe. Natural healers turn to aromatherapy for the many antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of aromatic essential oils.

What is aromatherapy used for? Some of the most common reasons that people use oils are managing pain, improving sleep quality, reducing stress, overcoming symptoms of depression, improving skin conditions, stimulating hair growth, soothing sore joints and many other reasons.

Essential oils are extracted one of two ways: either by steam distillation or expression, or pressing.

What Is a doTERRA Essential Oil?

The name “doTERRA” comes from Latin roots and means “Gift of the Earth.” If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells, essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and their beautiful fragrance, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.
But what exactly is a volatile aromatic compound? In short, these compounds are small organic molecules that tend to change quickly from their solid or liquid state to a gas at room temperature. They are called volatile because they change state quickly. When you first open a bottle of essential oil, you instantly notice that the aroma is potent and you can smell it typically even from some distance. The physical and chemical properties of the volatile aromatic compounds that compose essential oils allow them to quickly move through the air and directly interact with the olfactory sensors in the nose. Such unique properties make essential oils ideal for applications inclusion in aromatherapy using these compounds from plants to help maintain a healthy mind and body as well as other applications.

Blending Essential Oils

Many of the benefits of essential oils have to do with their aromas. To see how different aromas and chemicals in essential oils effect on your emotions, check out the oil properties wheel. However, research also shows that essential oils can help the body in more ways. Physiology aside, whether or not an aroma is appealing to you depends on personal preference. So how do you know if you’ll like the scent of a blend of oils that you make yourself? This guide can help you decide.
First, you can categorize scents in different categories such as top, middle, or base notes. ("Note" refers to how long the scent usually lasts.) Top notes evaporate quickly and have the shortest life. Middle notes make up the majority of essential oils and take some time to establish their scent. Base notes are heavy and last the longest as they evaporate slowly.
There are also families of scent that apply to essential oils. We have included some of them below along with what ‘note’ each is considered:
Citrus
  • Encompassing oils like Wild Orange, Lime, Lemon, and Bergamot, citrus aromas are usually easy to identify. They smell fruity and clean, with a bit of a sour bite. Citrus notes are most often top notes.
Spice
  • Spicy oils are often warm-smelling and some are a little balsamic (meaning the scent is somewhat resinous with a sweet or vanilla-like tone, somewhat like balsamic vinegar). They can be middle to base notes. Cinnamon Bark, Cassia, Cardamom, and Black Pepper are some examples.
Herb/Grass
  • Have you ever smelled an herb garden or walked in a grassy field in spring? That’s precisely how many of the herbs and grass oils smell. Fresh and sharp, most oils here are usually middle notes. These include oils like Thyme, Rosemary, Basil, Patchouli, or Marjoram.
Tree/Wood
  • Woody fragrances are middle to base notes. Their scent is grounding and stabilizing, much like the roots of the trees they come from. Most wood oils can be described rich, woody, nutty, or sweet. Arborvitae, Cedarwood, and Sandalwood are good examples.
Floral
  • Floral oils are mostly middle notes. They are often powdery and soft smelling and very much like the flowers they come from. This includes oils like Lavender, Geranium, and Ylang Ylang.
Additionally, you may see other descriptions like:
  • Minty: Cool and fresh scents, such as Peppermint or Spearmint. (Top notes)
  • Earthy: Oils with an almost smoky and earth-like scent, like Vetiver. (Base notes)
You then need to determine what categories of scent you like based on your own preferences, it’s time to blend. Keep in mind that essential oils from the same scent family or category usually blend well together. But, if you want a balanced scent, you will want to use all three note types in a blend for the best results.
Here are some examples of scent families that go well together:
  • Citrus with floral, mint, and spice
  • Spice with floral, wood, and citrus
  • Herb with wood and mint
  • Tree/Wood with floral, herb, mint, spice, and citrus
  • Floral with spice, wood, and citrus
If this is your first try making your own blends, we recommend approaching blending by picking one oil first. Then see what other oils may go well with it based on the information here. As with most skills, the only way to learn it is to try it. You may be surprised by what you create!

"I want to share some things I have learned about acne and how to support healthy skin. I had severe acne as a young child and into my teens. I was on antibiotics for my acne from the age of about 10 until 17. I'm sure you can imagine the trauma that caused to my gut! I bring up the gut because my research strongly correlates the health of the gut with the health of the skin. The following are my suggestions to those dealing with acne based on what I have learned.

1. Focus on oils that help topically. The HD Clear Skin Collection has a cleanser, lotion, and oil that are wonderful. One of my sons saw huge improvements to his acne using these three products as directed. Frankincense is great to help with scars. Melaleuca helps to dry up blemishes. One of my daughters rotates geranium, the purifying blend, and melaleuca on her face. I use coconut oil as my cleanser and moisturizer and then dab frankincense on any blemishes. (Google how to wash with coconut oil.)

2. Focus on the gut. One of my daughters takes a TerraZyme capsule with her meals, sometimes two if the meal has wheat in it. (Wheat is a trigger for many people. I don't know if i's the gluten or the nasty chemicals that are sprayed on the wheat.) PB Assist is another great supplement for gut health. Frankincense and DigestZen are very supportive to the lining of the gut as well. Those can be taken in a capsule once a day or in some water. Adding coconut oil to the diet is also helpful.

I have also noticed a huge correlation between sugar and acne. Sugar feeds the candida and other pathogens that are usually out of control in the gut of someone with acne. GX Assist is a good one to kill those nasties, but reducing the sugar WAY back in the diet is so helpful. That seems to be a key for helping acne in my experience".

Why doTERRA essential oils?

Picture
"... the majority of our oils come from exclusive agreements where the growers and distillers will only sell to doTERRA.
So if anybody is telling you they have the same quality essential oil as doTERRA, or that they get their essential oils from the same producers, that simply isn’t the case."

doTERRA works with farmers and distillers in over 40 countries to provide essential oils to customers around the world. doTERRA values the wealth of expertise local growers and producers have when it comes to the plants that provide essential oils.
Creating partnerships with the myriad growers and distillers is no simple feat either. It takes a proven record built over years to establish an honorable reputation. By dealing fairly and honestly with individuals and co-ops, doTERRA has earned their trust. That effort is paying off as word spreads about the integrity of doTERRA. More and more people are signing up to work with doTERRA, making us the world’s largest purchaser of essential oils.

doTERRA Product Innovation
Essential oils are naturally occurring, powerful aromatic compounds that hold incredible benefits for our health and well-being. Improving on what nature has already created can be largely a fool’s errand. Nature knows what our bodies need, and has already provided those resources to us.
When it comes to product innovation, doTERRA employs a simple tactic: allow nature to do what she does best already.
