Inspiration from the Latin "inspirer" means "to breathe into". The Greeks believed that inspiration comes from muses who were inspiring poets, musicians and designers to imagine and create. Inspiration is an invisible source that helps you to visualise and create new things. Inspiration comes from anything you can see, feel, touch, hear and even smell. How many times have I been inspired by Chanel or Christian Dior perfumes! Inspiration comes from anywhere such as history, art galleries, movies, architecture, nature, fabrics and fashion design shows. The list is endless. Everything changes very fast in fashion industry, it happens almost every day. How can you get to stay inspired without losing your original inspiration? The answer is, if you find something you are passionate about and your heart bits fast and you feel excited, that is when you know you have been inspired by something huge! Take that idea, document it, sketch it or write about it. Many fashion designers have to follow fashion trends, designers must predict what their customers want months in advance and tap into their customers mind and needs as much as possible. You can follow the trends, or you can break the rules, and set your own trends. Fashion trends change every 6 months, new styles and silhouettes introduced for the purpose of consumers to feel the need for new and different items in their closet. To know the upcoming trends, you should read magazines, visit trade shows, read trend reports and attend fashion shows. There are many professional trend research companies that can provide a professional service and advice on upcoming fashion trends. While you are learning how to design a fashion collection, take a closer look at how some fashion designers create their collections, what is their source of inspiration, what colours and materials they use, how many pieces do they include in their collections. Do they design fabric prints for their collections like Dolce and Gabbanna, or do they decorate their collections with 3D embellishments like Chanel? Dolce and Gabanna Mediterranean heritage is evident in each collection's energy. Sicily has been giving tons of inspiration for the brand for years. Latest collections of D&G draw inspirations from the golden mosaics of Sicily's Cathedral of Monreale and Ancient Greek Mythology. The walls of the Cathedral are covered with mosaic-pictures in bright colors on a gold ground. The collection features printed mosaic patterns and amphitheaters on silk and linen, patterns of Greek coins and leather hand painted gold, and ancient columns as heels on shoes. Fashion designers look for inspiration in some very surprising places, but who said inspiration comes from boring places? Alexander McQueen created a very unique collection inspired by the natural world-the bees.
The designer drew inspiration from the "matriarchal society where females rule". The collection featured bee and beehive inspired print and textures, and a honey-based natural palette. The wasp-waist corseted jackets were made of gold-on-black honeycomb-patterned jacquard.
